Questioning Tips and Tricks

Questioning Tips and Tricks Use these questioning tips and tricks to engage your students in higher-level thinking during your lectures and discussions. Updated on: February 1, 2007 Page 1 of 2 Questioning Tips and Tricks Asking good questions at the right time and in the right place is a learned skillâ€"one that will require time and attention throughout your teaching career. Here are some tips and ideas that will help you make your classroom (or any subject you may teach) dynamic and intellectually stimulating. Back and Forth Thousands of teachers engage in a practice that I refer to as verbal ping-pong: the teacher asks a question; a student responds. The teacher asks a question; another student responds. The teacher asks a question; another student responds, etc. Sounds pretty exciting, doesn't it? But it happens all the time. When a student answers a question, there's absolutely no response from a teacher. Most teachers tend to accept student answers without praise, encouragement, criticism, or remediation. One educator refers to this as the “okay classroom”â€"one in which the teacher is nonresponsive and nonencouraging. Students need specific feedback to understand what is expected of them, correct errors, and get help in improving their performance (see How Students Learn). If all we do after getting an answer to a question is mumble “Uh-huh” or “Okay,” our students are not getting any specific feedback. Equally important, this nonresponsiveness from the teacher tends to inhibit both the quality of responses as well as higher-level thinking abilities. When you ask a question and get a response from a student, be sure to always give some kind of response to that student. The response should be one of four kinds: Jabberwocky Remediation is a teacher comment that helps students reach a more accurate or higher-level response. Praise. “Congratulations, you're on the right track!” Encouragement. “Hernando, I really liked how you pulled together all the information about Saturn into your answer.” Criticism. “No, that's not correct. You forgot to carry the two.” Remediation. “Sarah, your answer wasn't quite right. Think about how Sylvester felt when he was a rock.”

Noah Ford Mr. Works English 11, E Period August 18th, 2012 The Sun Rises and so does Chaos The protagonist in Ernest Hemmingway’s The Sun Also Rises, Jacob Barnes, is a down on his luck war veteran living in France. Jake is characterized by his experiences prior to the events of the book and he narrates the story from a quiet observer’s third person perspective, often times quite cynically, exemplified when he tells his friend Robert Cohn, â€Å"You can’t get away from yourself by moving from one place to another.†Although never openly stating it, Jake on several occasions implies that due to a war injury he has lost the ability to have sex which leaves him feeling very insecure about his own masculinity, likely contributing to his†¦show more content†¦Jake is consciously aware that there is a problem, which is more than can be said about his friends. Media and Anti Corruption Free Essays

In some countries, such as Bulgaria, Macedonia, Bosnia Herzegovina, and Albania to a much lesser extent, the independent media has brought to the fore numerous corruption cases, exposing high officials. It has also been a major force behind mobilizing public opinion against corruption, as in the case of Bulgaria. At the same time it has exerted indirect pressure on the respective governments to take steps to limit corruption practices. We will write a custom essay sample on Media and Anti Corruption or any similar topic only for you Order Now The Bulgarian independent media, which has been marked by intensified anti-corruption reporting, stands out with its permanent engagement in the public debate about corruption and the efforts to curb it. It is characterized by improved quality coverage of corruption issues, expansion of the public dialogue in the media through inclusion of opinions of other civil society sectors and individuals and increased follow-up of reported cases, all of which speaks for a trend towards greater professionalism in its anti-corruption efforts. However, the limited role of the independent media in some countries should also be noted. In some, such as Bosnia Herzegovina, this has been due to the fact the media is mostly state controlled. In others, such as Albania, corrupted individuals have instigated distrust in the media, which lacks the professionalism necessary for investigative journalism and has fabricated and then denied its facts in corruption cases. A serious impediment to the greater role of the independent media is the fact that it is rarely truly independent. There is a problem of media ownership, symbiosis between business and media, the relations between the authorities and the owners of the media. On the Balkans the media is often financed by international organizations and thus has to rely on foreign help because of the small market size, in the case of Bosnia Herzegovina, or by certain business lobbies in the case of Albania. There are also cases of media close to current or former governments, in Bosnia Herzegovina, for instance, which can impede investigative journalism and its favorable impact on the efforts to combat corruption. Since it is also often regarded as a political tool by the owner, either the state or a private entity, the pressure exerted on journalists can often lead to biased coverage and impede impartial corruption investigation, which is illustrated by the Romanian press. A further hurdle to a greater role of the media is the fact it often lacks access to essential government information. For instance, in Romania, because of few laws giving access to public information or lack of their enforcement, the independent media has to rely on unofficial channels in corruption cases. Because of this unofficial information, which may be incorrect, the official authorities are even more unwilling to cooperate with the media on corruption scandals. The analysis of the media possibilities to investigate and report corruption represented the objectives of the Freedom House Assessment Report on media responses to corruption in some countries in the region summarizes the main difficulties: – Lack of independence – Lack of access to basic government information – Punitive libel law and prosecutorial abuse – Weak advocacy groups – Disincentives to investigative journalism – Lack of experience and training opportunities – Public cynicism regarding corruption How to cite Media and Anti Corruption, Essay examples

The tiger, Richard Parker, is very friendly toward Pi when he is not hungry and is always overprotective with anything in his territory. The hyena is very fast, sly, and greedy; when it sees its prey, the zebra and the orangutan, it will stop at nothing to get it. The orangutan is polite and is found on island of floating bananas. The zebra is innocent and an easy target for the hyena because he has a broken leg. These characters’ human like behavior help project how they think, act, and behave. Next he fights nature to survive; such as the sun, ocean, weather, and carnivorous island. These conflicts help story go on by giving more things to achieve. Life of Pi has two main themes. The first theme is humans act more like animals than they think. This is one of the major themes because Pi behaves like an animal to survive. He uses his instincts, turned into a non-vegetarian, and eats whatever he finds. The second major theme is friendship has no species, race, religion, shape, sizes, and color. This goes with the story because in the story he makes friends with Richard Parker and starts to train him. These two themes are important because they show the importance of friendship. The literary devices in this story usually describe what is going around Pi. The author describes sounds, the tiger, and weather movements using similes. The author also describes religion and destination by metaphors. In addition, the author describes thoughts sharks, waves, and darkness through personification. Life of Pi has several conflicts that make the plot line more interesting. It uses literary devices in a meaningful way. Life of Pi has various settings. This book is important to read because it shows lots of faith, religion, bonding, and other traits that help you go through life. Life of Pi is a book that I recommend to read. Life of Pi free essay sample Life of Pi Analytical Essay In the novel Life of Pi, Yann Martel uses the protagonist Pi to demonstrate how faith, ritual and one’s will to live save one from the barbaric and carnivorous reality. Pi Patel, lover of faith and various gods and their beliefs loses his family after a shipwreck and drifts on the Pacific Ocean with a zebra, hyena, orangutan and a tiger, Richard Parker each struggling in their own way to survive. Yann Martel uses the protagonist Pi to claim that one retains his or her survival will through writing.Martel includes the fact that Pi writes, â€Å"I die† as his pen runs dry because it symbolizes the break of his daily ritual. Pi unconsciously makes a ritual for himself daily to follow in order keep himself busy that he forgets the notion of time. Pi is able to survive because he makes an effort to forget the amount of time that passes (242). We will write a custom essay sample on Life of Pi or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The element of time symbolizes the Pi’s despair but as he slowly forgets the existence of time, he also forgets his desolated situation. Pi dedicates himself daily to working hard to not remember or think deeply about how much time has passed. If Pi were to think about the amount of time that has elapsed, he would remember his loss of family and friends making him once again look forward to death. By nature, animals including humans favor consistency and dislike change and disruptions in their ritual. Pi unconsciously conducts his own religious rituals within his daily routine and grants him continued faith in God to survive. But Pi’s religious rituals also each lack a requirement necessary for example his Mass lacks Communion and his darshan lacks murti. As his routine gradually breaks apart, so does Pi’s confidence in sustaining life. The Communion and murti represents the disruption in Pi’s life but his routine of recording his everyday life at sea in his journal substitutes for the missing elements of his religious ritual and helps Pi sustain his will to survive. Daily writing in the journal led Pi to sustain his humanity while being isolated from society. Writing down his thoughts allows Pi to retain his last grasp on human society and it gives him a sense of hope. The journal keeps Pi from cannibalism and alleviates his loneliness but as journal entries stopped, Pi gradually began to lose his sense of humanity. Pi’s last entry in his journal, â€Å"I die† signified as the death of his humanity and â€Å"driven by the extremity of my [Pi’s] need and the madness to which it pushed me, I ate some of his flesh† (322). Due to Pi’s religion, he is a vegetarian and refuses to eat meat yet to survive, he abandons humanity. Being at sea gradually forces Pi to lose memories of his life in society.Pi admits to his â€Å"madness† when he decides to eat human flesh. From the perspective of society, eating human flesh is judged as cannibalism and when Pi begins to accept the fact of eating human flesh, he has already begun to lose a part of his humanity. Writing in the journal allows Pi to retain the thinking of society including its norms such as the consuming of the same species is unjust and mentally insane. When Pi’s ink starts to run out, he is unable to continue writing and that ends his last form of connection to his previous life living on land.At this point of the novel, Pi acknowledges his decline of humanity and with it, degrades himself and his will to live when he eats human flesh. Judging himself with the eyes of society, Pi begins to waver in his faith to survive. If Pi were able to continue his journal, Pi would not have mentally been driven to its end forcing Pi to give up humanity and slowly lose his will to survive. Pi’s last humane note, â€Å"I die† demonstrates how ritual, faith and humanity pushes one further and signified the beginning of a new hope.Martel portrays the significance of one’s will to live on a long voyage across the Pacific Ocean by challenging faiths and beliefs and questioning human’s sanity when driven to the extreme. Writing is a form of communication that is a vital part to society, Martel illustrates this point when Pi’s one and only form of communication is lost. Writing helps one organize their thoughts and is a part of oneself, also one’s connection to society. Society representing humanity and vice versa can be retained through writing in order to increases one’s will especially will for survival. Life of Pi free essay sample The Aura of Orange Human, animal, plants, and all the Earth’s content is survivor. They are fighting for their rights in order to live in this beautiful world. The novel Life of Pi written by Yann Martel, has employed a lot of symbols that is related to the life. One of the most significant symbols is the color orange. The author uses orange as a symbol of maintenance of the spirit to survive in survival. This can be proved as most of the objects that are in the color orange in the novel generate feelings of hope, can develop courage in survivors, and last but not least can keep them continuously energetic; in order to strengthen their hearts and spirits to face all the possibilities in life. With the presence hope, the spirit of survival can be maintained well as orange color represents the color of hope in the novel. We will write a custom essay sample on Life of Pi or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page It is because the orange color is bright and inspires people and also gives hope to them. This is related as the theme color of firefighter is orange; when they are going to rescue the victims, their present has gives those who need to be rescued a hope being saved, (Theme). This can be shown in the novel Life of Pi as the sunrise gives hope to Pi and Richard Parker to be saved. â€Å"Warmth came only when the sun, looking like an electrically lit orange, broke across the horizon, but I didn’t need to wait that long to feel it. With the very first rays of light it came alive in me: hope. As things emerged in outline and filled with color, hope increased until it was like a song in my heart. Oh, what it was to bask in it! Things would work out yet. The worst was over. I had survived the night. Today I would be rescued. To think that, to string those words together in my mind, was itself a source of hope. Hope fed on hope,† (Martel 199). Based on this quotes, Pi says that the sunrise does give them a hope to survive everyday in the lifeboat and hope to be rescued. Every day that have passed, they have succeed to face it and still survive for 227 days stranded on the sea. Based on the real world, most of the people will be happy as the day is coming cover the night. People can go for work to find some stuff and money to support their needs; students go to school or college to gain more knowledge to have a better life, thus, people will appreciate every second that goes by. On the other hand, the orange color of objects has give an impact to express hope on overcome their obstacles. This can be seen through a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker, when he is trying to save his life by fighting with the sea and the big wave. As Pi says to Richard Parker, â€Å"‘do you see this lifebuoy, Richard Parker? Do you see it? Catch hold of it! HUMPH! I’ll try again. HUMPH! ’ He was too far. But the sight of the lifebuoy flying his way gave him hope. He revived and started beating the water with vigorous, desperate strokes,† (Martel 98). The color of the lifebuoy is orange as it is the color of survival that being used in the survival’s tools. These has give Richard Parker a hope to survive in the scary ocean since he is not a really good swimmer during the storm. Thus, the present of orange objects or the rays of orange do give a full meaning of hope to survive in order to keep their spirit alive. Development of courage can magnify the spirit of survival as the bravery can be represented by the orange animals in Life of Pi. This is related when a person has enough courage and ready to defeat his fear, the spirit of survival will increase and his big obstacle in life that is fear; can be settled down. The color of fire is majorly in orange color. Although the fire of matches, people always afraid of it. This shows that the color of orange is symbolize courage and determinants. This can be proved in the novel by the act of a female orang utan, Orange Juice who tries to hit the hyena; as the hyena being cruel to the zebra. Orange Juice has act, â€Å"she thumped the beast on the head. And what a thump it was. The beast’s head hit the bench it had just reached, making such a sharp noise, besides splaying its front legs flat out, that I thought surely either the bench or its jaw or both must break,† (Martel 130). Although Orange Juice is just a weak animal that never haunt any animal and just love to eat fruits, however, her courage overpowers her ability. As Pi monologue, â€Å"an adult female orang utan cannot defeat an adult male spotted hyena†¦ What does fruit eater know about killing? Where would it learn where to bite, how hard, for how long? † (Martel 130). This is something amazeing as the orang utan is very brave to face the hyena. One of the reasons why Pi called the female orang utan as Orange Juice is because the orange animals do represent the courage in an animal. On top of that, Richard Parker the Bengal tiger also represent courage in an orange animal as he is being scared by the hyena. The flame-colored carnivore emerged from beneath the tarpaulin and made for the hyena. The hyena was leaning against the stern bench, behind the zebra’s carcass, transfixed. It did not pull a fight. Instead it shrank to the floor, lifting a forepaw in a futile gesture of defense,† shows that the hyena was afraid of the orange Bengal tiger that look fierce on him (Martel 150). This is how the Bengal tiger stay to survive in the lifeboat on the spooky ocean. Therefore, it is true that orange is the color of courage; and this can spread up the spirit of survival to promote the important of life. In order to maintain the spirit of survival, energy is very important both physically and emotionally, orange objects on the boat in the novel encourage Pi to be energetic. Both physically and mentally need to be strengthen and energetic enough to think and react at any circumstances. â€Å"It seems orange-such a nice Hindu color-is the color of survival because the whole inside of the boat and the tarpaulin and the life jackets and the lifebuoy and the oars and most every other significant object aboard was orange. Even the plastic, beadless whistles were orange†¦ How true it is that necessity is the mother of invention, how very true,† as Pi start to create an idea on how to invent and innovate something using all the things surround him to full fill his necessity that is safety, (Martel 138-139). He uses these orange objects to build a raft, to save him from Richard Parker and the sharks. As in the Aura’s theory, orange helps with assimilation of new ideas, broaden the minds, helps in cope with life, and stimulates energy, (Color). Furthermore, when the orange color has turn to pale, however, their spirit to survive has fallen down. They are dying when they have stayed for very long time in the lifeboat in the sea, â€Å"What was orange became whitish orange†¦ we were two emaciated mammals, parched and starving. Richard Parker’s fur lost its luster, and some of it even fell away from his shoulders and haunches. He lost a lot of weight, became a skeleton in an oversized bag faded fur. I, too, withered away, the moistness sucked out of me, my bones showing plainly through my thin flesh,† (Martel 338-239). This tells that their spirit has turned pale as what happen to the orange color. Therefore, orange color objects can be shown as hyperactive behavior and color of energy; this will maintain the survivor to be always energetic and can hold their spirit safely. In conclusion, orange color or objects or any the references in the novel Life of Pi can generate some ways to keep holding their spirit up to stay survive in this nasty world. As well as orange color can be symbolized as a source of giving hope, element of showing courage, and encouraging survivor to be energetic. As a human being, spirit or belief in ourselves is very important to let us be ready to face this world, thus, preparations of it must be prepared in any circumstances. If orange fruit can protect itself by being sour taste and has thick cover; on the same time gives vitamin C to those who eat it that really benefits to health. So, why not human become tough physically and mentally also in order to maintain their wisdom and rationality? On the one hand, they full fill others needs. That is the real meaning of survival.

For centuries, the idea of God has been a part of Essays

For centuries, the idea of God has been a part of man's history. Past and present, there has always been a lot of different types of believers and non believer in god. The people who are believed to have faith in god are in many different religions. On the other hand, there are many different people out there trying to find actual proof that there is god. There are many people trying to seek answers. Even today with all l the technology we have, we still do not have a definite answer to the question "does God exist". Among many philosophers and scholars who have tried to answer this question, I am going to peak on Rene Descartes' theory on Gods existence. In terms of believers and non-believers, Descartes is definitely one of the believers. Though there are so many uncertainties, the existence of all of these uncertainties may explain why God really exists. For the believers, God provides answer to all of their questions except questions regarding God himself. The following are some of the general arguments for the existence of God. Descartes' hypothesis on his theory starts with the idea of a God who is eternal, infinite, omniscient, omnipotent, benevolent, and perfect. In his earlier Meditations, he claims that God may be a deceiver. He later concludes that god cannot be a deceiver because deceit would be an attribute of imperfection. According to Descartes, this idea of a intelligent powerful being, who created everything that exists, can not come from within him who is imperfect. Descartes believes that this perception of God is that he could only actually arise from a perfect being. Thus Descartes concludes the only remaining option to be that this perception was naturally in him. We may wonder why god created humans to be imperfect. This would bean that since he created something imperfect, he is imperfect himself. Yet, Descartes claims that God gave humans no faculty for making mistakes. The reasoning behind these statements made by Descartes is related to free will. Descartes states that the faculty of judgment is not infinite in human beings; human error is not dependent upon God but is rather a mere defect. On the other hand, free will is a freedom to choose to do want you want to do. From these statements it is clear that humans can make mistakes. In the " Meditation Five," Descartes attempts to prove his hypothesis of the existence of God based on the theory of clarity and distinctness of perception. He begins this theory by saying that they're things outside of him that have their own truth. Since he knows these ideas clearly, he claims that they are something and are true. Descartes states that he only claims things to be true that he can clearly perceive. From this concept, he constructs something that can prove him right. He believes that the distinct perception of the existence of god means that anything on this earth is created by god. That is the only logical explination. From this assumption, Descartes comes to the conclusion that God does exist. As long as it is clear and distinct, everything Descartes says is clear and true. In "Meditation Four," he states that "the will extends further than the intellect". He also stated that the faculty of choosing, his will, is finite. Descartes acknowledges the fact that he or anybody on this earth is not perfect. From these things that are being stated be Descrates, I believe that there is a God and one day we will have an explanation.

Categories That Generate Stories for School Newspapers

Categories That Generate Stories for School Newspapers Working at a high school or college newspaper can be a great training ground for an  aspiring young journalist,  but coming up with story ideas can be intimidating. Some school papers  have editors who are full of great story ideas. but finding an assignment is often up to the reporter. Interesting stories are plentiful if you know where to look. Here are descriptions of several types of stories to trigger your search for topics. plus examples of real stories involving those topics done by college journalism students: News This category includes coverage of important issues on campus and developments that affect students. These are the kinds of stories that typically make the front page. Look for issues and developments that make a difference in the lives of students, and then think of the causes and consequences of those events. For instance, lets say your college decides to raise student tuition. What caused this action, and what are its consequences? Chances are you will be able to get several stories out of this single issue. Clubs Student-produced newspapers often report  about student clubs, and these stories are fairly easy to do. Chances are your schools website has a clubs page with contact information. Get in touch with the adviser and interview him or her along with some student members. Write about what the club does, when they meet, and any other interesting details. Be sure to include contact information for the club, especially the website address. Sports Sports stories are the bread and butter of many school papers, but a lot of people just want to write about pro teams. The schools sports teams should be at the top of the reporting list; after all, these are your classmates, and many other media outlets deal with the pro teams. There are almost as many ways to write about sports as there are teams. Events This area of coverage includes poetry readings, speeches by guest lecturers, visiting bands and musicians, club events, and major productions. Check bulletin boards around campus and the events calendar on the schools website for upcoming events. In addition to covering the events themselves, you can do preview stories in which you alert readers to the event. Notables Interview a fascinating teacher or staff member at your school and write a story. If a student has accomplished interesting things, write about him or her. Sports team stars always make good subjects for profiles. Reviews Reviews of the latest movies, plays, TV shows, video games, music, and books are big reader draws on campus. They can be a lot of fun to write, but remember that reviews dont give you the kind of reporting experience that news stories do. Trends What are the latest trends students are following on your campus? Are there trends on other campuses that your classmates might find interesting? Find trends in technology, relationships, fashion, music, and social media usage and write about them.

The Dew Breaker Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

The Dew Breaker - Assignment Example nt is a building block, ever so delicately placed, that Danticat employed in order to give a hint as to his fathers own relationship with his memories, his past deeds, and his life in general. His fascination with mummies and the past, that they last for thousands of years, reflects his own fascination with his own past, and the dark secrets that lay there. His dark secrets, Danticat wanted to hint at, likewise has the ability to last for thousands of years, haunting his father even as he tries to live a new and placid life in America with his daughter. That anecdote on the grieving practices of the ancient Egyptians is a hint on top of other hints, much like the title of the book is a hint of what his father was in a past life, a torturer and a prison guard of proven cruelty (Danticat; Corbett). We get a sense that this is so, that the mummies are really representative of artifacts of guilt and shame, and in some ways of the actual terror and cruelty that his father, as a â€Å"dew breaker†, inflicted on many people during his watch as prison guard. There is a sense in some analyses of the novel, for instance, that point to this way that Danticat portrays the guilt and the terror that people, both victims and perpetrators, feel all the way to the present, even though they try so hard to live new lives and to escape from their past. This paper asserts that the fascination with the grieving process, and the reference to mummies living on for thousands of years, is in fact a symbolic representation of how, for the torturers like his father, and for the victims of that torture, there is no escaping the past, because the past lives on, like mummies which will not disintegrate and be completely forgotten. This paper asserts that this is a valid point to make. As far as victi ms go, for instance, there is the story that seems to mirror the fathers fascination with the past, and with it an unseen bag of bones, so to speak, that hides in the fathers psyche, a bag of bones

Business Decision Making Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words - 2

Business Decision Making - Assignment Example Secondary and primary data will be used to gather the data which will help in making the decision of opening a new branch of the restaurant. The restaurant is very successful and in a short span of time it has earned the company big profits. The taste of the food and ambience of the restaurant are the top priority because of which it gathers the attention of more and more customers. In addition to it, the price of the food is not very high and it is easily affordable by many. The success of the first restaurant and the increasing number of restaurants in London has encouraged the owners to open a second branch of this restaurant. It is expected that the second branch of the restaurant will also be successful and will also contribute in the profits of the company. Taste of the food and ambience of the restaurant are the two most important factors that influence the decision of a person to go to a restaurant and these factors will be determined by a market survey of restaurant goers. Financial effectiveness of the plan that will be made will be determined through Net Present Value (NPV) and Internal Rate of Return (IRR). From the articles of Chen et al. (2015) and Stroozas (2014) it is extracted that the ambience of the restaurant has a big impact on the minds of the customers. The ambiance of the restaurant influences a person to opt for a better restaurant. Literary Analysis Of Beowulf English Literature Essay

Literary Analysis Of Beowulf English Literature Essay Ever sense the beginning of time there have been epic stories about heros and courageous leaders who take down evil and bring peace to the people they protect, Beowulf is no different from this. Beowulf is an epic story that relates well to the time that it was introduced by having the stories of the epic battles and the defeats of the treacherous monsters that kept everyone entertained during this era. Not only does Beowulf represent the era well but it also has very interesting characters, themes and symbols that help teach us lessons that are very much so needed in todays society. Beowulf teaches us courage, it shows us characters such as Beowulf himself that are true to his word and self-confident, and it also shows us symbols that give an image of God and the hope that he brings to the people that believe in his word. When Beowulf arrives to the land of the Danes, as soon as they dock and get off of their ship Beowulf shows his courage instantly by taking the lead and explaining to the guards that watched out for raiders and enemy ships approaching who they were and where they were from so that they may advance to the Heorot which he had heard much about. After they get inside Heorot Beowulf truly shows his courage when he tells Hrothgar about all of the triumphs he had when he was younger and how when he heard of their problem with Grendel and how he planned to be a match for him so that he could be the one to bring peace back to Heorot. The news of Grendel, hard to ignore, reached me at home: sailors brought stories of the plight you suffer in this legendary hall, how it lies deserted, empty and useless once the evening light hides itself under heavens dome. [à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦] Now I mean to be a match for Grendel, settle the outcome in single combat. (410 414 425-426) He also explains how he is nt afraid of death because if he is going to die it will happen whether he wants it to or not and by doing this he gives king Hrothgar peace by knowing that he is courageous enough to take on this challenge and not be afraid by the terror that his people have been facing for the last 12 years. whichever one death fells must deem it a just judgment by God [à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦] Fate goes ever as fate must. (440-441 455). Not only is Beowulf extremely courageous but he is the mold that heros model themselves after he is noble, true to his word and his unquestionable trust in his skills. When Beowulf gets to Heorot and they begin to feast Unfearth goes up to Beowulf and questions the race that he and Brecca had in the fierce open sea saying that no matter what he had done before that he would not be able to defeat Grendel because many great warriors had come before him and his fate would be no different, however Beowulf has trust in his skills that God has graced him with just as he did when he raced Brecca in the open sea. The truth is this: when the going was heavy in those high waves, I was the strongest swimmer of all (532 534). By Beowulf saying this he is letting Unfearth know that now as well as when he raced Brecca he is the best and will not be beaten. Beowulf then begins to challenge Unfearths skills by saying if he was really as courageous as he has been saying he is then Grendel wouldnt be able to get away with killing all of Hrothgars people and that Beowulf will show Grendel different and that he will show him his skill. He knows he can trample down you Danes to his hearts content, humiliate and murder without fear of reprisal. But he will find me different. I will show him how Geats shape to kill in the heart of battle. (599 603) Beowulf by saying this is showing that he has great confidence in his skill as a warrior and that he do what Unfearth has been unable to do, which is free Heorot of their burden of Grendel. Later in the story Grendel appears in the night to eat the bodies of the soldiers that are in the middle of their slumber inside of Heorot and Beowulf is waiting for him to do as he said he would. After their battle Grendel had been beaten by Beowulf Grendel was driven under the fen-banks, fatally hurt (818-819) by defeating Grendel Beowulf was true to his word and accomplished what he had set out to do The Geat captain had boldly fulfilled his boast to the Danes: he had healed and relieved a huge distress (827 829). Beowulf has many things inside the story that a symbolic of God and how he can deliver us from our demons, or Grendel in this case that constantly torment us and cause us dismay in our everyday lifes. When Beowulf is at the feast when he arrives at Heorot he is sitting at a bench when the helming woman came by to give him a drink with measured words she welcomed the Geat and thanked God for granting her wish that a deliverer she could believe in would arrive to ease their afflictions. (625 628) When she tells him this it gives a kind of Godly presence to Beowulf that he is their savior and he will relieve them of their transgression that is Grendel and his murderous ways. In the beginning of the story it talks about how a leader will come one day that would be set apart from others that had come before to deliver the Danish people from all their problems. It also states that the shield was still alive when it was the mans time to go into the lords keeping. Shield was still thriving when his time came and he crossed over into the Lords keeping. (26 27) This is symbolic of how the shield is Gods word and Gods protection over us how when we have it with us in our lives we will be taken by him when our time comes to spend eternity in his kingdom. Another interesting symbol in the story is Grendel the story often refers to him as God-cursed (711) which is similar to the devil who was banished and cursed for the rest of eternity just as Grendel was as he was always living in torment and all that would ease him is the pain and suffering of others such as when he arrived at Heorot and saw all the men sleeping there. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ his glee was demonic, picturing the mayhem: before morning he would rip life from lib and devour them (730 732) Grendel enjoyed causing misery in the lives of the Danes much like the devil enjoys seeing suffering in our lifes. Beowulf is an amazing story that teaches us courage, it shows us characters such as Beowulf himself that are true to his word and self-confident, and it also shows us symbols that give an image of God and the hope that he brings to the people that believe in his word. Whether its courage or just teaching us to believe and trust in God through any transgressions that we encounter in life Beowulf can teach us many valuable lessons that can help make us better people.

Personal & Community Health

Stress; can have a major affect upon your body. It can be detrimental to your health. An increase to your stress levels stress can cause neurons to die which leads to headaches, anxiety and depression. In the digestive system there can be mouth ulcers and cold sores. In the circulatory system the constant elevated blood pressure and heart rate increases risk of blood clots or heart attack. Your breathing also quickens increasing your chances of colds or respiratory infection, while it also depressed your immune system leaving you more likely to get an infection. This has shown me that if you are constantly stressed out you will be more likely to continually be sick which in turn can lead to you becoming more stress. It is therefore important to constantly manage your daily stress levels. Psychological health; and well being are very important to your overall health, mentally and physically. A person who is in good psychological standing is able to: function and carry out their respons ibilities, they have a realistic perception of motivation of others, have rational and logical thought patterns, and they are able to adapt to adversity and change.Health is just not physical, your mental stability and health are also vitally important to your wellbeing overall. In order to be physically health you must also be psychologically healthy. MyPyramid; is an approximate to the amount of each food type that you should consume daily. It also gives you some rough guidelines for exercise time and to eat according to your personal calorie needs. It is important to eat a range of foods. A balanced diet is a key ingredient to helping your body maintain itself as well as to provide you with energy to make it through your daily tasks.Wellness-Illness Continuum: is an indicator of which way your health is going. You can be in average health yet you are heading towards illness. Or you can be of average health and heading towards optimal health and wellness. This has shown me that ev en though you may be healthy you have to make sure you are heading towards the optimal health and wellness with a zest for life and emotional growth rather than illness and worst case scenario premature death.Managing your Weight; is also an important part of being healthy. Depending upon your age, gender and height you should maintain a certain weight. This can be done by eating a balanced diet and regular exercise. Being an active person myself, I know how hard it can be to maintain your weight. I have the opposite problem to most people. I struggle to put on weight so I have to be very certain about what I eat and the amount of cardio exercise I do weekly.

Brass heat treatment

Copper in pure form has found its significant use only in electrical applications. But with the continued study of copper, the addition of other metals called alloys was developed which enhanced its various properties. Now, different Copper-based alloys were widely used in different aspects of engineering and manufacturing. One of the best known and is widely used is the Copper-Zinc Alloy or Brass. (De Garmo, Black, Kohser, 1997) Brasses according to Yu Lakhtin (1979) are â€Å"binary and multiple-component alloys based on copper with which the main component is zinc.† Below is the phase diagram of Copper-Zinc Alloy at different Cu-Zi percentage and temperature. The commercial value of Brass is in its ? and ? +? ’ phases. At these two different phases, different characteristics were distinct. Their distinction according to Lukhtin (1979) depended on Zinc content from 48% to 50%. The single-phase or ? -brasses were characterized by Lukhtin (1979) as â€Å"can be readily worked in both the hot and cold conditions† while the two-phase ? +? ’ brasses are â€Å"hot-worked at temperatures corresponding to the regions of the ? ’ or ?+? ’ phases. † He also described ? +? ’ brasses as â€Å"having higher strength and wear resistance but less ductility. According to him, â€Å"? +? ’ brasses were often alloyed with Al, Fe, Ni, Sn, Mn, Pb and other elements. † And â€Å"the addition of these alloying elements, except Ni, reduces Zi solubility in Cu and promotes the formation of ? -phase. † Further he wrote, â€Å"the addition of alloying elements, except Lead, raised the strength and hardness of brass but reduced its ductility. Lead improved the machinability and antrification properties of brasses.† According to De Garmo, et. al, â€Å"Copper-based alloys are commonly identified through a system of numbers standardized by the Copper Development Association (CDA) which was adopted later by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), and the US government. † Brasses were classified into wrought and casting brasses. According to Lakhtin (1979), â€Å"wrought brasses are used to make sheets, band stock, tubing, wire and other semi-fabricated products; and casting brasses for making foundry castings.† Owen Ellis (1948) further classified Brasses casting alloys into Red Brass, Leaded Red Brass, Semi-Red Brass, Leaded Semi-Red Brass, Yellow Brass, Leaded Yellow Brass, High-Strength Yellow Brass (Manganese Bronze), Leaded High-Strength Yellow Brass (Leaded Manganese Bronze), Silicon Brass, Tin Brass, Tin-Nickel Brass, Nickel Brass (Nickel Silver) and Leaded Nickel Brass (Leaded Nickel Silver). In his classification, Red Brasses consisted 2%-8% zinc, less 0.5% lead, and with tin less than the zinc; the same amount consisted the Leaded Red Brass except that lead is over 0. 5%; Semi-Red Brass consisted 8%-17% zin c, less than 6% tin, and less than 0. 5% lead; the same amount consisted the Leaded Semi-Red Brass except that lead is over 0. 5%; Yellow Brass consisted over 17% zinc, less than 6% tin, under 2% total of aluminum, manganese, nickel, iron, or silicon, and with less than 0. 5% lead; the same constitutes for Leaded Yellow Brass except for lead which is over 0.5%; High-Strength Yellow Brass consisted of over 17% zinc, over 2% total of aluminum, manganese, tin, nickel and iron, under 0. 5% silicon, under 0. 5% lead and less than 6% tin; Leaded High-Strength Yellow Brass has the same constituents except that lead is over 0. 5%; Silicon Brass has over 0. 5% silicon and over 5% zinc; Tin-Nickel Brass has over 6% tin, over 4% nickel and with zinc more than tin; Nickel Brass has over 10% zinc, with nickel in amount sufficient enough to give white color, and with lead under 0.5%; and Leaded Nickel Brass has the same but with lead over 0. 5%. From these differed composition of Copper-Zinc Allo ys different properties were possessed which gave them different uses. Ellis (1948) also wrote that tThe different required properties of Brass such as conductivity and hardness can be secured through heat treatment,† Below is a table of the different compositions, properties and uses of common Copper-Zinc Alloys. Question 3: When you were told your child had a learning disability, what were your thoughts and was it difficult to accept? Parent #1: When I was informed about all the disabilities that he was diagnosed with, I felt I had done something wrong to cause them. Question 4: What do you think your child’s teacher could have done to help him be more successful in the classroom? Parent #1: They could have given him a chance to cool down instead of confronting and arguing with him. Also he could have used a quiet place separate from the others to work. Question 5: What advice would you give another parent who just found out their child has a learning disability? Parent #1: If you don’t agree with the teacher or principal, make them explain. If you are having trouble getting through to the child change the way you react to their troubles. If your student is having trouble allow them to go talk to someone - a friend, teacher or counselor, anyone that can help them calm down. Talk and be open with teacher about how to deal with your child, that way you can both figure out what works and doesn’t work.
